February / March 2014 NEWSLETTER
Harmonies & Harminies
Hello all! We are now well into our second month of the Spring 2014 term and already five songs under our belts and I know from some of the comments you make that you are glad to be back into the routine of your singing with all the benefits it brings. We are pleased to welcome new members to many of the sessions this term – keep spreading the word. It is really great to see so many of you taking full advantage of your membership and attending several sessions a week which makes for a good experience all round –it truly is the more the merrier!
The full year singing schedule can be downloaded from the website from the members tab under “downloads” right at the top of the page.
IndigO2 Sunday 29th June 2014
I am delighted that we have now signed up enough performers to take part in the planned concert at the IndigO2 in June. This will be our fourth venture with 1640 productions since October 2012, and we are all looking forward to performing in a new venue. It is the chance of a lifetime to perform on a London stage and you can’t put a price on the “buzz” that comes from it! For more detail please refer to the emails of 27th January and 7th February – I am really keen that as many of you as possible are given the opportunity to be part of this fabulous day, and although the closing date has passed I will consider any late applications (especially from Mezzos or Altos)
This wonderful opportunity does carry a cost to you but “Friends of A Handful of Harmonies” have been fundraising to reduce that to some extent - the cost of hiring the venue has to be covered so as a performer you have to buy four tickets (they range from £15 to £40 each) and “Friends” are putting up £20 per person against ticket costs. Thus the minimum cost to you would be £40 if you bought 4 tickets @ £15 minus the £20 contribution. Transport to and from the venue will also be provided free for the performers and there will be places available for non-performers on the choir coach which leaves in the morning and the family and friends coach which leaves mid-afternoon at a cost of £15 per person.
The Show Choir has had great start in January and February and made excellent progress breaking into two groups and singing in four parts. Now that we have the O2 in our sights we will be focussing on that material at Show Choir sessions. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with making tea at the end of the session and the wonderful array of cakes that have been provided. In January we raised £10.39p for the Stroke Association, and this month an incredible £40.70p for the Millie- Rose Appeal. It is great to end the afternoon with some social time that also benefits a good cause. Thank you all for your generosity (and fabulous cakes!).
With over three hundred of you to communicate with I am heavily reliant on the website and email –some members do not have access to the internet and find it difficult to keep up with the information that is circulated. They have linked up with other members who have kindly “buddied up” with them and print off information to make sure they are up to date with what is going on. Do you know of anyone in your group that needs a buddy and if so please can you help? Thank you.
Members Area Resources
Many of you may know that Mel provides the sung online resources for the website which you tell us are a welcome resource for practice purposes. However could I please courteously request that if you have any specific requirements or requests about the format of the recordings, when they will be available or anything regarding the choice of material or the website that these come to me in the first instance.
Mel and I work closely as a team on deciding material, how to best present it and what we actually need to offer but ultimately she is my resource for the website recordings and I do not expect her to respond to queries. If you have any questions or suggestions, criticism or positive feedback do please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org or catch me one of the sessions.

a gesture of friendship,
